"Projections or not they offer no challenge."
"They waste energy." With that he pointed his revolver at the old man and shot him in the chest. The man toppled into the dust at my feet, his wife sobbing with horror and kneeling beside him, trying to stanch the blood with her shawl. "Gregory," she sobbed, "what have they done to you?" "Fool." The Hirogen by the computer grabbed the gun away. "That was a waste of good ammunition." The other man laughed. "We do not need to worry. This hunt will not last so long. We control these humans just as they control these lifeless images. Like them," he gestured toward us, "they believe they really are what we tell them they are. This game is losing its appeal." I knelt beside the woman, who now stroked Gregory's hair with tenderness. He was right. The holographic images were merely lifeless projections. Was I myself merely a lifeless projection? I wasn't a human being, but neither was I like the woman beside me. I had been given a gift, a unique opportunity. Like Prometheus they had given me light, and like Prometheus they had given me fire, the fire of the intellect and the will. If I understood my captors correctly, the majority of Voyager 's crew had no control now. They simply played a part they had been assigned. I had the power of action, and I felt the obligation of duty. I rose and walked purposefully toward the opposite wall. "What is she doing?"
One of the Hirogen reached out for me, but before he could stop me I quickly entered a code into the still glowing terminal. My image disappeared, but my backup program continued to run in the computer matrix. I scanned the ship's systems and began to analyze the incoming data. Harry Kim was attempting to overload the holoemitter network and transfer optical processor control to his station. I could assist him in his efforts to charge the secondary power relays, which he was trying to use to trigger the overload. I would, however, destroy my projection data matrix, as well as my only remaining backup. I would be trapped with no way to reactivate my holographic display. My code would become too thoroughly integrated into the ship's secondary systems to differentiate myself into a separate entity again. I did not hesitate. I had lived with these people, witnessed many of their joys and sorrows, watched Tom and B'Elanna fall in love, observed Chakotay's struggle with his darker side, felt the grief the Doctor and Neelix shared over the loss of Kes, admired Captain Janeway's compassion and leadership. I could not join this family, but I would not desert them. The struggle with the Hirogen continued for many days. I did what I could to assist the crew, although there was little more I could do in my present state--a small power surge when needed, a communication conveniently lost. When Captain Janeway reached a truce with the Hirogen
